Well i thought my first post should be one of fairly useful information so what better than some career advice. Now before I start rambling on, please keep in mind that the thoughts expressed here are my own and bare no resemblance to any other persons/organizations views.
Where do I begin? One of the contributing factors to creating this site was a bit of a soul search in terms of a future career and in a sense what my life was going to be like. Let’s be honest what young person in their twenties really has a solid notion of what they want to do when they older? My guess is very few do, and those that do are either extremely focused, determined individuals or they simply have had a sheltered youth and haven’t been given a chance to think independently or ambitiously. I am not saying that everyone in this world needs to have ambition to the extent of getting a top class degree, moving on to a well paid job and getting recognized in your field, but I sincerely believe that you need to have a goal or an objective no matter how far fetched, at least have something to aim for. However having ambition isn’t a real problem for people, it is focusing that ambition on an area that you are passionate about.. that is the deal breaker.
Now for me, I have just graduated university in England. I’ll be honest, I got a good degree, First class honors in Computer Forensics BSc. Oh it was great, everyone was congratulating me, telling me how great I was etc etc. Just to make something clear, the degree means absolutely nothing to me. That is easy for me to say, sitting here at 09:15 writing on my laptop with the degree in the back pocket, but I sincerely mean that.. and here’s why.
You could be the most decorated, relentless, ambitious, kind, caring, intelligent student that the course has ever seen! You could wipe the floor with every exam that is thrown your way, write your 30,000 word dissertation in half an hour and then go score ten tries captaining the 1st XV before half time. After that you go home to the captain of the cheer leading squad who is… lets just say.. keen? You could have all of that every day of the week, but it wont mean shit if you have no direction, no sense of achievement, no challenge and most definitely no fulfillment. OK its a farfetched scenario that many of us probably wouldn’t say no to.. for a while at least. But think about it this way: Imagine your career consisted of a daily routine that never changed.. No spontaneous challenges, no competition and certainly no recognition, I for one couldn’t live like that, nor will I ever live like that. I am a freethinking individual, I don’t like classing myself with other people, because groups are for democracy’s that are at the “head” of the developed world… Groups make things to easy, to similar and take away from whats personal, whats unique.
Sit and think for a second what you imagine your future career to be like. Not as in job title, but actually what you want to feel like when you are at work. Winston Churchill once said “When you find a job you love, you’ll never work again!” It is an over used quote and I hate myself for putting it here, but I just love it. I want to live by that, I want my life to be my job. Not everyone will think the same way I do though, some people are too concerned about earning the money and cut back on happiness, that’s fair enough but you have to make a choice because there are very few jobs out there that offer you a compromise for monetary comfort and self satisfaction.
I made a short list of some types of employees there are out there in the world, it is an extremely unrefined list but an overview of how I sort of see the world. Have a read and see what group you would put yourself into.
1. The Bird of Paradise – Strives for perfection, a character who accepts challenges, always looking to outdo their rivals. . Success is measured not by how many shiny coins they attract to their nest, nor by female adoration but by creating a piece of work that is elegant, beautiful, mind blowing or simply world class. The types of people who are not afraid to admire others, yet strive for their own personal achievements. These people are few and far between but don’t concern themselves with financial success, concentrate on life’s mysteries and existence as a whole.
2. The Tortoise – A character who is neither here nor there. Not vicious enough to be like the big bad honey badger, yet not elegant enough to dance with the birds of paradise. That sounds like a criticism but the reality of it is that tortoises don’t mind. They will defend their position on the ambition ladder within a shell of good attributes. They work hard, get paid well and live more than comfortably. This is enough for them, they don’t need ridiculous sums of money, nor do they need to be at the top of field they just need to have a certain degree of recognition and be content that they have at least made it to the top section of their area.
3. The Sloth – Not much needs to be said about the sloth. Resembles a bored teenager who just cares for laying around all day and smokes a few joints to at least feel like they are “special”. Offers nothing to society in terms of work ethic, ability or even money making prowess. They are lost souls who need to realize that life weighs more than 2grams. Might stay in a dead end job their whole life, but they wont mind, it pays for their weed while their parents pay for their rent.
4. The Honey Badger – The most fearless, angry, and driven character you will ever see. Never backs down, full of confidence and will challenge anyone that gets in their way.. they usually win too. The difference between them and the Bird of Paradise is that they don’t do it because they care for it. They do it because they are greedy, eyes bigger than their belly type characters. Money and expensive shiny things is what they live for. They will happily destroy another species if it means that their cubs will eat $500 caucuses everyday for breakfast. An unrelenting beast that takes no prisoners.
5. The Ant – Last but not least comes our most common character out of the lot. There are more ants in this world than any other character on the list. Millions upon millions and there is a good reason why. They work hard, damn hard. Whatever job they are given they will work it till they drop. Some of them go off track from time to time, maybe there is something in their path and they decide to take the long way round, but they know a break is sometimes deserved. In terms of ambition, they may have a burning desire buried beneath the surface, maybe a long lost dream that could of been. But that’s not saying they don’t enjoy what they do, they do enjoy it, but they aren’t passionate like the Honey Badger in terms of killing anything in its path for money nor the Bird of Paradise who seeks the next scientific breakthrough. They are content, happy with life but there might be an underlying sadness that takes over when times are tough.
Now these little creatures and characters I made are a rough idea of the types of people there are in this world and this is the key point I am trying to make. It doesn’t matter what you want to do, it doesn’t matter where your strongest abilities are, what matters in this world is ensuring that you are fulfilled, challenged and happy on a regular basis. I struggled for months on end to figure out what career path I want to take. Ultimately it came down to some good advice from very helpful people. My own opinion would be to pick a career where you can envisage yourself working with similarly motivated individuals. If you are a honeybadger go out there and destroy what is in your path, take what is yours, I am not one to tell you it is wrong. We are all different, and have different ways of viewing our lives. Never let the pressure of choosing the perfect career ruin your day, because quite frankly there is no “perfect” career. There could be thousands of jobs that you could do, but to narrow it down you need to think of something that you will enjoy, regardless if it is dancing for the ladies or tearing the head off a cobra…
Do something that will make you happy!
